Hillsong - Let Hope Rise (christian music documentary)

00:37
give me another 30 minutes and then
00:40
we'll come out with larger lenses
00:45
I want get it done man I'm telling you I
00:48
want everything you so we have never
00:58
been more disorganized in antara
01:00
maybe one of the biggest things we've
01:02
ever done it is funny hearing songs for
01:05
the first time in an arena yes I don't
01:09
know what my plane tonight I know that
01:11
we're playing four new songs but I don't
01:14
know that again yes are we definitely
01:27
sometimes we get really good at touching
01:29
our thoughts and ideas to these moments
01:32
of inspiration and calling them gods I
01:36
don't want to do that I really want to
01:38
get Heaven's thoughts on these songs
01:42
there's probably a lot of people who
01:44
would hear this play you're out of your
01:45
minds but I believe that God created
01:51
music for the sole purpose of being used
01:55
to to worship Him to connect people the
01:58
human heart our soul with heaven we're
02:03
doing all of this so that one person
02:06
somewhere that I might never meet
02:08
actually gets to experience God in a new
02:15
way and a true way
02:24
see people around all the time and now
02:26
searching people are searching beside
02:28
friends of up to a nine to five job and
02:29
then they go out on the weekends get
02:32
smashed they've actually said there's
02:34
got to be more than this how might there
02:35
is
02:39
it's like you have the most valuable
02:42
thing and you know people need it but
02:45
they don't know they need it it sounds
02:47
really weird right it sounds like this
02:50
like whatever you need a Vaughn but you
02:54
just don't know you need it but don't
02:58
feel stressed out so it's great it's the
03:00
best place Lord Jesus we just thank you
03:08
so much be grace God's love is so great
03:11
that we can't fully understand it yeah
03:14
sure it doesn't make sense but trying to
03:16
make the most unnormal thing become
03:19
normal is like I guess the adventure
04:13
Tim to the villa
04:17
break you marriage
04:23
this hurt you
05:21
I've always felt like Hillsong worship
05:23
is just sound of a healthy vibrant local
05:27
church when I started a church I wanted
05:30
to have a church that wrote songs that
05:32
that influenced the way that people
05:34
worship good morning Gail we recently
05:36
got a first-hand look at how one wildly
05:39
popular mega church from Australia is
05:41
making its mark here in the United
05:43
States and despite shop declines in more
05:45
traditional organizations Hillsong has
05:47
continued to thrive like never before no
05:49
song church started in 1983 with just
05:52
under a hundred worshippers but has now
05:54
grown into a congregation of over 30,000
05:57
in Austria now their brand of rock and
05:59
roll religion as going services have
06:01
lines around the block 25,000 members in
06:03
12 there are satellite churches today
06:05
from London to Paris Kiev
06:19
no song church is drawing in the crowds
06:21
one reason their Christian rock band
06:23
Hillsong UNITED the Hillsong House
06:26
such a life-giving culture that wherever
06:30
they go people that maybe normally
06:32
wouldn't connect with God do and their
06:34
lives are transformed in such a powerful
06:36
way that really is sweeping across the
06:39
world everything starts with humble
06:44
beginnings we sure do now the very first
06:47
music inside our church literally was an
06:50
old guy on a piano accordion a keyboard
06:53
player playing a piano which was out of
06:54
tune and some of them some of the keys
06:56
didn't even work there was a drummer who
06:59
I don't think to be honest he could
07:00
really even play and one of the first
07:03
people to come into the church to be
07:05
born again was a bass player and his
07:07
wife was a nightclub singer so that was
07:09
the start it was extremely humbled oh
07:11
but us at all this is good to really go
07:13
somewhere
07:30
haven't been here so long baby
07:33
like a la Bria
07:37
can we go in
07:42
it does not look the same this stage oh
07:50
my gosh it is too alright
07:58
oh my goodness it truly is the stage
08:07
take it away babe
08:13
this is where I stood I stood here as a
08:16
young 25 year old and pretty for the
08:21
very first time to my facility the first
08:23
time here Australia and at the end of
08:27
that service you know we give people an
08:29
opportunity to connect with Jesus to
08:32
come to faith and so I did that really
08:35
wrong
08:36
then no no's during the three people
08:37
responded I can still remember three
08:40
people interestingly two of those people
08:41
I still know to this day today
08:44
well actually it looked exactly like it
08:46
looks now with it all for the book
08:48
sooner and the History Center in seinem
08:50
is just her little public community the
08:53
first time we walked into the place I
08:55
think probably another probably a little
08:58
discouraged because it was very raw
09:01
there wasn't a lot that was too
09:03
compelling about it to be honest but we
09:05
came back that night in that night we
09:07
sort of sensed but there's just a great
09:10
life and energy in the place which to me
09:12
it is still one of the great great
09:14
things about Joe's life today is the
09:17
energy the excitement into the zeal take
09:21
in the early days there was this
09:23
sort of mission statement our city and
09:25
beyond so our focus was our city and
09:29
then there was this beyond factor and I
09:30
don't think in all truthfulness any of
09:33
us had any comprehension what that
09:34
beyond my men
09:38
it's funny because my dad didn't like
09:40
the least likely guy you know he's kind
09:42
of super awkward which you know things I
09:43
got that from him as well
09:45
he lives a life but all he's ever done
09:47
which other people for that's why we're
09:49
here because so so many leaders would be
09:52
like so insecure about other people
09:55
having a platform of being promoted or
09:58
like he's the opposite he's like guys go
10:00
like you know we're all in this together
10:02
and I think that's what is phenomenal
10:04
about who he is the guy who discovered
10:08
New Zealand Mauritius and Tasmania
10:10
there's a Dutch explorer Abel Tasman and
10:13
he missed Australia but he pioneered
10:15
again in the second time he found the
10:17
west coast of Australia so to me you
10:19
never know what big things you babe us
10:21
if you don't have a pioneering spirit
10:30
you know I just think it's great if
10:32
people fill up their part of the visa
10:34
then the more powerful the force we
10:36
become and if so I could quickly pass me
10:38
my Bible I've been thinking a lot since
10:40
last weekend when I finished my message
10:42
talking about the church in Revelation
10:45
which is called the faithful Church what
10:47
a powerful thing when people live with a
10:49
divinely implanted sense of a purpose in
10:53
other words you know that you're alive
10:55
for something so much bigger than
10:57
yourself when we get a job leading
11:00
worship tonight the same thing we were
11:01
on the road is that you know as quickly
11:04
as possible get all the attention off us
11:05
onto God and people will you know
11:07
encounter God for their life and this
11:10
you'll probably try and get a bit more
11:11
attention on yourself
11:12
yeah well I'm happy man it's monster day
11:15
I feel sorry I think you do it so well
11:17
yes I just well you know by the time you
11:19
step up to the mic there's no hope
11:20
you're the human it's not true
11:22
I step ariix the worship bleeding and I
11:25
don't we didn't give ourselves this
11:26
title you know nobody like I even know
11:27
where it came from
11:28
I mean joke about it because it kind of
11:33
is funny sometimes
11:34
yeah we're put in a position where our
11:36
job is to in some way draw attention to
11:38
ourselves to draw it away from ourselves
11:40
figure that out by God uses people come
11:50
you'll create
11:57
I want to create music that kind of
11:59
entices people in
12:02
I create this body of music that put
12:06
Jesus in the sin of I know it allows
12:08
your blood count of Jesus and all the
12:11
taking
12:39
you know we are on this big stage
12:41
there's lights and cameras and
12:44
everything about that you would say is
12:46
for a performance but for us growing up
12:51
in the church serving in church working
12:54
for a church the only time we get on a
12:57
platform ultimately is to serve people
12:59
is to is to help them find where they
13:03
need to be
13:24
the first thing I knew about Hillsong
13:26
was a song here we were in America
13:28
singing a song that was born thousands
13:30
of miles away in Australia and that's a
13:33
great thing to be known for but what you
13:34
find out is that in most great movements
13:37
like Hillsong the song is the tip of the
13:39
spear and that tip penetrates into the
13:44
hearts of people it cuts through the
13:45
curtains that divide the church and
13:47
divide countries but what's behind it is
13:51
the arrow in the arrow of Hillsong is a
13:54
story of Jesus
15:30
we have no explanation for what we are
15:33
doing now and what we're seeing now we
15:38
get back to our hotel rooms did you that
15:41
was weird
15:43
we just did that and no one's gonna know
15:46
we're the biggest band you've never
15:49
heard of so my neighbors they know I'm a
15:51
Christian they know I work for a church
15:53
with them no idea what I just did last
15:56
time and we share that and that Forge is
16:05
some pretty awesome relationships this
16:10
is cut he doesn't have the guts to do it
16:12
like look at him he used to do stuff
16:23
like that but he doesn't anymore
17:07
he's run a race like never before oh my
17:12
goodness but what do you have to say
17:15
about that pretty much I was like their
17:23
pasta when they were junior high kids we
17:26
were kind of committed to doing this
17:27
thing where we're like if we're gonna
17:29
run a youth group we want the young
17:31
people involved we want to give them the
17:33
platform rather than older people being
17:36
up there let's give the platform to the
17:37
young guys
17:38
it was never this I hear I'll build a
17:41
band it was like let's just create
17:43
something that these guys love and
17:45
hopefully it's an expression that their
17:47
friends really enjoy and ultimately
17:50
points people to a relationship with God
17:53
Mikey what's going on man
18:07
you know it started off the first time
18:10
the guys got invited to Canada ha ha and
18:13
it's like wow you know Canada you know
18:16
like we're almost in America
18:18
look I'm not enjoying this or whoever
18:21
said to in this plan actually kid gone
18:24
that's quite nice
18:25
there was this underground movement that
18:27
started connecting with what was going
18:29
on in churches and youth ministries all
18:31
around and so then we do these events
18:33
and then be thousands turning up because
18:36
it wasn't one or two who like the music
18:38
was a youth pastor bring in like a
18:40
busload of students who were like this
18:42
is awesome
18:43
well like who are these people
19:22
so what you
20:16
no bad
20:25
I feel like you know Joel especially he
20:33
understands that there's massive people
20:37
that need we used to go around saying
20:49
it's not a show it's not a show because
20:51
we're not rock stars or we're not a rock
20:53
band but I've started to think and hope
20:56
that it is a show maybe a show of
20:58
humanity maybe a show of who God is and
21:03
hopefully a show of how good god is what
21:10
we do these days is kind of like so
21:14
consumed by all the glitz and glamour
21:20
it doesn't mean anything you're not
21:22
reminding ourselves that everybody is
21:25
important and everybody deserves to know
21:28
that God loves them it's impossible to
21:32
truly know Jesus and not have a heart
21:35
for others those who are poor those who
21:38
are outcasts and so I pray that that
21:41
would always be the story of our church
21:53
we are heading to a compassion village
21:56
you know we sing about how much we love
21:58
God and we talk about how much we want
22:00
to change the world but you can actually
22:01
do it
22:03
there what compassion do is they partner
22:06
with local churches just to help the
22:08
poorest of the poor with education basic
22:11
nutrition thank you for me that's not
22:17
even that big of a sacrifice you know my
22:19
$40 a month Moses Moses where's your bed
22:23
where do you sleep
22:24
all right on the floor that's a big bed
22:27
that's a king-sized bed we can stand in
22:31
front of it tens of thousands of people
22:33
and celebrate and jump and sing and yeah
22:36
this is awesome touring with a band but
22:38
not being too detached from people's
22:40
realities that are coming to these
22:41
nights or that people face around the
22:43
world I think is such a healthy thing
22:44
and I want to make sure that I never
22:46
forget that and just get caught up in
22:48
you know my world and think about the
22:52
people that were trying to help
22:57
so what would you say to someone who
22:59
watch this footage who said you guys are
23:00
doing for the camera yeah easy
23:03
assumption to make you know as a church
23:07
we have somewhere near forty thousand
23:10
children or sponsorship in fashion all
23:12
around the world so you know it's
23:13
something obviously we take really
23:14
really seriously I mean even just
23:19
walking here we walk past a couple of
23:20
biases on the street and this is a sense
23:22
of hopelessness but at the same time I
23:25
think there's plenty of opportunity and
23:28
I think God's not looking for us to do
23:30
everything he's just looking at spur do
23:31
something and use there's one thing
23:33
that's in front of us and so today on
23:35
this beautiful day in Manila City
23:37
hanging out with a bunch of kids picking
23:40
some balls around from frisbees and
23:42
having a laugh and I think that's
23:43
awesome often times you go into the most
23:49
difficult circumstances and yet people
23:52
have this innate happiness and a joy
23:55
that frankly sometimes in a
23:57
materialistic Western world people don't
23:58
have that's challenging to me but the
24:03
wonderful thing about God is there is a
24:04
future and there's a hope for anybody
24:06
who will look to him and depend on him
24:08
I just feel like the call on my life and
24:12
on our church's life is to take the
24:15
message the most wonderful powerful
24:17
message there is to the world to as many
24:20
people as we can by any means that we
24:22
can people are drawn by worship and by
24:26
music it's just amazing how far all
24:28
reaches
26:00
Oh
27:02
single shit
27:31
jeez
28:08
I'm so ready to do new songs you know
28:12
God's always doing a new thing and uh I
28:14
know I need new music all the time I
28:16
need new songs so if the challenges on
28:18
to write a new record we're gonna do
28:21
find something you know hopefully the
28:23
people to sing next time we're in Manila
28:27
just wherever people are who want to
28:30
sing with us
28:34
pays go-to song of the spirit just go
28:41
with it right
28:45
alright so we got that Jesus would you
28:48
say we like this
29:08
Georgie if she's nearly free huh
29:15
often we'll be driving along and
29:17
there'll be an airplane in the sky
29:19
George would be like mommy look dies in
29:22
the airplane hi Daddy
29:24
where is daddy bean marry in America I
29:29
think this time has he been in Asia yeah
29:33
in agent who has he been with Louise he
29:36
will with JD and who else and cracker
29:42
and who else and taya with children it
29:47
has its challenges and it's tough and
29:51
even little things like down to and
29:53
discipline and things so like punt that
29:56
daddy's home today it's not just mummy
29:58
its daddy back
30:19
good space
30:23
mr. nugget
30:36
dinnertime possibly use your car afraid
30:55
Oh what tell me you guys gone away
30:56
just he just knows it in the morning but
30:58
we've both got to go out he's gonna get
31:00
his hair cut down at Parramatta get my
31:02
body Lee Hager we are my in-laws house
31:06
where we live for us to get ahead in
31:10
life and trying to save enough money to
31:13
buy our own house one day we just can't
31:16
you know Lauren is at work she looks
31:17
after the girls and you know I work for
31:20
church and it's it's awesome but you
31:22
don't work for church to earn money
31:24
that's for sure
31:25
I do imagine that often when I'm onstage
31:27
in front of all those people that they
31:29
probably you know would expect me to
31:31
have my own big McMahon show my own crib
31:33
but at the same time we're on a mission
31:36
with a message to put it in you know in
31:38
a cliche and no I feel like you know in
31:42
the last trip we went on that people
31:47
that people are responding to the
31:49
message more than ever as long as that's
31:51
happening I come home I miss these girls
31:55
yeah and is there another tour coming up
31:58
soon I know I've got maybe the less
32:01
glamorous side of it or I you know I'm
32:04
not doing the tour's whatever I am home
32:05
with the kids but when I was growing up
32:08
as a young Christian girl I remember
32:09
saying God use me whatever way use me
32:13
and this is you know the call that
32:15
you've put on both of our lives right
32:17
now and I want to do that the best that
32:20
I can you know
32:21
I see my role at home you know really
32:26
vital the end of the day the only thing
32:29
we're really called to do is to love God
32:31
and love other people and if you
32:32
actually love people the way you treat
32:35
them is is a lot different than I think
32:37
we treat each other me included guilty
32:53
are you serious
32:54
just cuz you got wings on you think you
32:57
can fly okay
33:21
Georgey
33:23
hey big man
33:41
hey hun I hold that thank you I love
33:46
it's gone it's difficult times to figure
33:50
out when to just be the dad but at the
33:57
moment
33:57
this is what our family does this is our
34:01
family's ministry I guess you know I
34:05
travel and I do all this in my wife she
34:08
pays for it but she believes in what
34:15
we're doing just as much as I do and if
34:18
I felt for a minute that she didn't its
34:22
it would be easy for me to stop doing
34:24
this cuz
34:27
it's it is costly no doubt about it
34:31
that's tough on family and it's tough on
34:34
my sanity it's not worth what we're
34:40
being paid but it's worth it for what
34:44
we're doing
34:56
Oh
35:12
he's fit
35:24
oh I see
35:26
yes
35:43
Hey
35:48
we say
36:10
Jesus Christ
37:27
come on Amy
39:43
we're headed into Sony Studios writing
39:46
songs for the new album coming up we've
39:50
never really done a big-budget studio
39:52
record it's been the craziest two years
39:55
I would say you know when Zhaan came out
39:57
people really responded to Zion and and
40:00
as a result of that we found ourselves
40:01
in places like the Hollywood Bowl Red
40:04
Rocks in Colorado it was such a trip and
40:07
it's interesting time because it's
40:09
starting from scratch again I guess this
40:12
would be I think 11 no and the funny
40:15
thing is you'd think that you'd get more
40:17
confident and better at doing it but
40:20
even just talking to Joe last night like
40:22
you don't it doesn't feel like you get
40:23
any better at it the best best musical
40:36
thing ever with a great bridge it could
40:38
be cool it's like the tip of the iceberg
40:40
and I had how crazy this is gonna get I
40:43
guess it's a great metaphor Mike this is
40:45
my other metaphor okay it's like we've
40:47
got this awesome ship but we don't have
40:49
that much food but like we've got enough
40:51
to hopefully find another destination
40:52
but if we don't find you know we kind of
40:54
have to go back to the island that we
40:56
actually got all the food from
40:57
originally which is like the last album
40:59
you know so like as iron was sort of
41:01
like there you know and you know we've
41:03
got a bit of resources a speaking
41:04
creative creatively yeah and there's
41:06
only so many coconuts you can eat right
41:08
so we need to go find Robin
41:09
hypothetically if we found a fish could
41:11
you could eat it I wouldn't it was a
41:16
triplet yeah you see the lad has it
41:25
coming
41:26
was that I was just riding a lawn and I
41:31
liked it was it it's something that just
41:33
came to my head as I walk in this unique
41:34
dessert yes that's another time you know
41:37
I'm telling you you mean okay I was
41:39
talking about filling his head that's a
41:41
Katy Perry song no no no that was 100%
41:45
the truth pick a key see the letters
41:51
come in it's horrible bad Mel do this is
42:00
good man I feel like I'm just saying I'm
42:06
organized the best idea we've got that's
42:08
a joke but it is an original melody I
42:11
promise you
42:24
breathing on an empty
42:27
speaking wait
43:34
it's impossible to know really if a song
43:37
is gonna work until we play it live the
43:41
songs mean nothing if they're not
43:42
helping people connect with guys we're
43:44
gonna plan a night at the forum in LA in
43:46
a few months and hopefully everything's
43:48
finished by then wears clothes I type
44:01
cool t-shirt man can you stop playing
44:06
Street Fighter cause we're about to have
44:08
a band meeting I was always the same oh
44:14
and you just go to be honest we are
44:19
playing awfully as a band it was a great
44:21
musician I'm just saying we're not
44:22
playing well together it's not like
44:24
we're on the same page designer stuff
44:26
that was the last time we practiced
44:28
anything new
44:29
so we've played the same stuff for 12
44:31
months and we graded that stuff but when
44:33
it comes to playing something years like
44:34
you know what now you know like so we
44:37
have to just start getting better one
44:39
thing I reckon it would be really
44:41
helpful is that we just make a decision
44:43
to really help Mikey cuz it carrying
44:45
much more than probably most of us
44:46
realize there's precious there's you
44:48
know this guy's having a bed having a
44:51
baby and like I don't know if any of us
44:53
know the weight of producing a record
44:55
but it's pretty serious so it's like if
44:57
he calls you and says can you do
45:00
something just be like yep I'm gonna
45:01
make it happen you know I don't really
45:03
have any major theme for the album but
45:05
if I was gonna have one starting place
45:07
it would just be the beatitudes 95 if we
45:11
get the same page with this at all it'll
45:13
be awesome
45:14
it says God blesses those who are poor
45:16
and realized they need him for the
45:20
kingdom of heaven is theirs God blesses
45:22
those who mourn for they will be
45:23
comforted God blesses those who are
45:26
humble for they will inherit the whole
45:29
God blesses those hunger thirst for
45:31
justice righteousness but they
45:46
there's probably three times in my life
45:50
oh I had a little conversation with God
45:52
all I said said I wanted to sing and
45:55
that I wanted him to use me I didn't
45:58
know what that looked like and I didn't
45:59
even know if what would happen
46:00
definitely not saying that I'd move to
46:02
Sydney
46:03
cuz I didn't like city
46:07
Icona was in a place where I had $200
46:10
left in the bank and it was for the next
46:12
week's rent and that's all I had
46:14
everyone else that I was crazy cuz I
46:16
wish my mom she's right Debbie you have
46:19
$200 that's all you have so I moved down
46:22
visited the city campus and I was like
46:25
just amazed by the whoosh and I said to
46:28
God I was like I love the heart of
46:30
worship here and like you know what
46:32
they're doing and I was like if I could
46:33
be part of it I'd love to and then have
46:37
many a lady who can you I I'm working in
46:39
City campus I just bought it
46:41
so things around my god loves me because
46:43
of these things in place
46:49
I just love Jesus and I love his
46:51
presence and I love the fact that we get
46:53
to sing and and just worship Him
46:59
actually still got to the vocal team
47:02
gonna city campus up until a few months
47:04
ago or my job role change and I started
47:06
touring just as a full-time job I'd
47:09
actually done like a lot of secular gigs
47:11
and I learnt a lot of stuff but it was
47:13
nothing compared to seeing the judge so
47:17
much different with the joy factor
47:20
some people don't actually know how to
47:23
worship God uh
47:24
they haven't encountered him before so
47:26
sometimes all they need is like someone
47:28
just to lift their hands for them to go
47:29
like maybe I should do that and like
47:31
actually lifting your hands is like a
47:33
sign of surrender and it's so I love
47:35
doing it all the time you see me
47:43
I grew up in a Christian home I accepted
47:48
him into my I'll actually when I was
47:49
five but it was when I was like 16 17
47:54
when I kind of made the decision to like
47:57
go to church for myself because I wanted
47:59
to go from then I've never had to live
48:05
thinking that's got any more than this
48:07
I got honestly don't know how people do
48:09
life without Jesus there's purpose
48:11
that's calling like I Know Who I am in
48:14
him despite if I'm people say other
48:17
things against me and I know what I'm
48:20
handed you know hidden to I I guess you
48:24
could say I'm a worshipper like I love
48:26
Jesus and I hope that I draw people
48:28
closer to him
48:41
you know a song can reach people and
48:44
it's disarming and I think that's what I
48:46
love about worship as music has always
48:48
been something that connects me to go
48:50
straightaway and I realized a bit of
48:54
like God Who am I to be here like
49:02
you need to like lead these people like
49:06
I'm just a country girl
50:05
Oh
51:08
music has the ability to enter someone's
51:11
soul without their permission it helps
51:14
create an atmosphere and when I first
51:19
was writing songs I thought all of the
51:22
outers in the music the melody and it's
51:25
just one aspect of it but for me it's
51:27
like now the real challenge is in
51:29
actually articulating this stuff in a
51:33
way that is accessible for people you
51:36
can personal pop song and it doesn't
51:38
really matter what it's about and sounds
51:39
good and makes you feel good it's great
51:40
for us you're putting words into the
51:44
mouths of people these songs are written
51:48
for people to sing not just to listen to
51:50
Oh
53:55
the last thing you want is something you
53:58
wrote because you thought it was a cool
53:59
idea or a cool lyric or that rhymed
54:03
you know it's suddenly leading somebody
54:05
to think something that is not in line
54:07
with this Olga is really hard with
54:11
lyrics like you'll spend months on stuff
54:13
there's not many Christian lyrics that
54:16
talked about going to the great unknown
54:18
or this concept of God if you're not
54:21
going to help me I'm not going to make
54:22
it kind of thing a lot of those themes
54:24
they're a little bit too blue for
54:26
Christians because you're supposed to
54:27
have it together all the time so it's
54:31
it's a hard thing when like Christians
54:33
go like you just got to be real positive
54:35
and you've just got to believe that
54:38
God's gonna you know do whatever because
54:40
at the end of the day I think God can
54:42
kind of do whatever he wants
54:49
but I haven't really slept thought a
54:51
month-and-a-half
54:52
I'm getting crazy nightmares I jumped
54:55
out of bed thinking that I've smothered
54:57
him all it is like died or something
55:00
it's crazy
55:09
he didn't smile for a little bit once he
55:12
came out I got kind of worried about it
55:14
but he's now smiles all the time which
55:15
is good such a scar is pretty good he
55:22
went for a checkup and he's like oh he's
55:23
got a large heart murmur they ran a
55:26
bunch of tests and they said yeah he's
55:28
got two holes in his heart it was
55:30
terrifying he came back from his
55:31
operation they said come me and hung in
55:33
and we didn't realize it was just gonna
55:35
be an open cavity so yeah that was quite
55:38
confronting when you see one machine
55:41
it's very unhuman we felt pretty
55:43
helpless the doctor said the after
55:46
acknowledged he's a very sick boy be
55:48
grateful for the time I've had with him
55:49
a great six weeks I've got two sisters
55:56
but one of them died almost 10
55:58
she was the oldest out of this it's just
56:00
15 at time
56:02
and then I mean it's such a weird
56:05
situation like we went we ended up
56:09
having was we found her in a bedroom
56:11
with her at Brennan neck
56:13
I think everyone comes to the point
56:15
where they ask is this a real film so
56:18
moments is like how could you let that
56:21
happen or like are you really there
56:26
I guess the worst day the hardest day of
56:28
my life was in 1999 where one of my
56:32
colleagues came into my office and the
56:35
very last thing he said I'll never
56:36
forget he said I'll one last thing Brian
56:39
they said it's not about you it's about
56:41
your father you know you think about a
56:43
lot of things that you could imagine for
56:45
the one thing I could never ever
56:46
imagined was that child abuse would come
56:49
that close to my you know my own life I
56:51
had the most horrific job of controlling
56:55
my own father and asking him about this
56:58
he went all dry in the mouth and pretty
57:01
well confess that it was true and the
57:04
fallout emotionally definitely lifted
57:06
stop the world's cruel out there for
57:10
many people it's a fallen planet and
57:13
sadly there are casual recently and so
57:18
when they walk in to the house of God
57:20
that is not perfect but healthy alive I
57:23
have an opportunity to encounter life
57:25
the way actually was meant to be the way
57:27
God intended it to me I mean the Bible
57:31
talks about faith what everything said
57:34
faith gives you is an incredible hope
57:36
and something much bigger than yourself
57:38
it's simple trust in God it's believing
57:42
that no matter how bad this is no matter
57:44
how horrific that doesn't matter day
57:52
it was so stressful but we knew that so
57:55
many people were praying and God had
57:57
this well healing for sure I don't
58:05
really know how that stuff works but I
58:07
do know is that God can heal you see I
58:13
hear guys say this is foot meeting for
58:15
the first time
58:23
it's like the smallest movie but I send
58:24
it to so many people
58:34
I mean I was such a crazy telling the
58:37
life I was 10 years old really kinda
58:39
still got family out but I didn't add a
58:42
portal closer together and brought us
58:44
closer to God she was kind of the reason
58:47
I picked up a guitar so I mean I feel
58:51
like she's in this as well in a weird
58:54
way that's why I feel like we're at our
58:58
best when we're broken you know because
58:59
I feel like that's the moment where God
59:01
gets to kind of be made evident and to
59:08
give us an opportunity to love and to
59:11
trust and to operate from a place of his
59:15
strength not our own
59:26
no method and there I find
59:39
in oceans deep my faith will
60:29
a buddy
60:34
yes sir
60:43
she'd miss it
60:46
yes you
60:57
hi
61:10
we know should you
61:21
to
62:24
when my trust
62:44
my faith will be made stronger
64:59
my
66:10
okay
66:17
I'm so
66:26
you
66:31
what's the feedback we're performance on
66:34
oceans I don't want it like none design
66:37
like because it's not about it what yes
66:41
what's been the feedback for you
66:42
performance I know sure yeah um people
66:45
said thank you
66:46
some people thanked me out it sounds way
66:48
but for the high note because they're
66:49
like it's that it's that moment when I
66:54
get emotional just you know this yeah
67:00
people just said thank you cuz it's like
67:03
maybe that moment for them is like the
67:05
moment where they just don't know like
67:07
words to cried to God I like like was to
67:11
explain a situation and like it just
67:13
kind of like unlocks things some people
67:15
who said that it's like giving
67:17
expression to something that I didn't
67:18
know that I could say to God or like had
67:20
that moment of like this is so hard yet
67:23
I trust you and yeah those amazing
67:26
people who said so
67:52
my name's coves and I play drums for
67:54
United yeah and where are we we're in
67:58
the house that we're using to write then
68:00
oh yeah to write the next album where's
68:03
that we're in San Clemente is how you
68:05
pronounce it yeah we're in is it even
68:09
southern yeah it's Southern California
68:11
yeah I mean we flew into LA and then we
68:14
drove for a while I think we drove south
68:19
come on man help me out are you serious
68:24
I'm from the other side of the world
68:28
what was it a success oh yeah
68:50
and there's part of us that feels a
68:51
responsibility to the church to write
68:53
songs they can see we listen to people
68:56
outside and the secular while doing what
68:58
they're doing they're creating
68:59
unbelievable music and I think that's
69:01
pressure for us is we want to create the
69:03
same thing with a sound and it stands up
69:07
tool hopefully to like may not be the
69:10
dream
69:24
the other song
69:45
see how different it is there's such
69:46
different phrasing between the two parts
69:48
I feel like these songs that we've done
69:51
a real good job of like I like putting
69:53
these two ideas together I don't know
69:56
maybe I just made enough men to live in
69:57
the same neighborhood
70:24
I've always been attempt in the back of
70:27
my mind and made music that would
70:29
satisfy some of the creative desires
70:31
been in me more like put me in a place
70:36
where I could be applauded by people I
70:39
want to be applauded by
70:43
but I just can't do it I think if we
70:50
started to just try and make it about
70:52
ourselves I think it would trip over
70:54
pretty fast cuz I'll anything with that
70:56
good truthfully this whole process is
71:04
all about some kind of environment
71:06
untouchable unexplainable spiritual
71:10
something but for us it's just such a
71:18
process like scratching digging and like
71:21
it's like like this puzzle pieces you
71:25
know
71:28
but we don't know what the picture looks
71:29
like and only god this I think more than
71:37
anything we're trying to wait on the
71:38
breath of God to kind of inspire
71:41
something but I think you've got to be
71:45
ready for that
72:07
we really only started with someone two
72:09
days ago you know I think has some
72:11
lyrics new hood I mean he probably don't
72:15
really say this but upon the mountains
72:18
we have climbed as a tower was built of
72:20
blood and steel and still we reach to
72:22
the sky
72:23
when the skies came crashing down
72:28
I know this is concept we've been
72:30
thinking about he's like everything in
72:31
the world was upwardly focused
72:33
everything in the world is like I could
72:35
have the best of this but I'm the best
72:36
of that got to get the promotion gotta
72:38
make my money but the way of Jesus all
72:40
the way of God is actually downward
72:42
focus and we just need to serve people
72:44
and he loved people there's always that
72:51
temptation to go all right well let's
72:53
write another oceans but now I'm like
72:56
affirm believe that God's always doing
72:58
something new as opposed to the comfort
73:01
of resting on laurels
73:02
arresting almost worked in the past
73:09
the end goal for us is always finding
73:11
ourselves in a place of trust if we get
73:15
to that place and we've done that job
73:17
it's not in our hands anyway it was
73:19
never to begin with
73:28
why the never get tired which really
73:31
feels really awesome
73:35
there's always that the courts well
73:38
that's a weird one of those read
73:40
accidents
73:43
they did a great accent a name is
74:01
songwriting right here the working title
74:03
has touched the sky but there's always
74:05
been a breath on it that I can't
74:06
describe or explain the only problem is
74:10
if you just sit there all right God
74:12
we're ready you know wait wait wait wait
74:14
he's gone now you can actually do
74:15
something that you actually need to like
74:16
do some work
74:30
see
74:36
it's thinking about it there's a
74:37
scripture I think it's the second Samuel
74:39
it's David and he's saying I would not
74:41
sacrifice my king that which cost me
74:44
nothing
74:50
down yeah they did
74:52
the idea being that you go up later and
74:56
so I think that's the person's the
74:57
artist or whatever you want to call it
74:58
like it has to come with a sense of my
75:01
not possibly I'm giving up a lot to get
75:04
there because that's how valuable one
75:08
God is but how valuable what he's called
75:10
us to is
75:22
should we try a well that leaves very
75:26
often leaves room for you to just
75:28
terrified like that just leaves room
75:32
like these rooms well you know for the
75:36
Lord to do anything that's holy spirit
75:42
yeah we've gotta leave some holy spirit
75:44
room in there yep
75:47
so what stands between you in a done
75:49
record like probably about 12 songs with
75:55
a great lyrics what fortune that speak
76:01
on the stars those dazzling Heights to
76:06
pass to
76:09
got so high to fall so far but I found
76:16
him in his love sweat
76:20
beating our soul breathing
76:27
when a lady
76:30
I put fine spirit sorry
76:35
I'd search the sky women ate him
76:54
if
77:13
should be
77:29
Oh
78:51
the other thing has tried to lay because
78:56
it might be the melody stick to sing the
78:57
melody for me for say you don't did that
79:17
data we've been rehearsing for a few
79:27
days in a rehearsal space it's been the
79:31
first time the bands played some of the
79:32
stuff that we've recorded and they're
79:36
sounding really good but to be honest I
79:39
haven't heard it with folk I've heard
79:40
one song with vocals
79:44
I'm pretty tired we were up till 4:00
79:46
this morning she's it was after 6:00
79:48
just doing like these think like just a
79:50
bit of work stuff that this has to get
79:52
done it's just kind of no other option
79:53
right now
80:11
I personally have been trying to finish
80:14
this song all day she's kind of funny
80:17
because Joel's go like three songs to
80:19
finish and I'm still struggling to
80:20
finish one song
80:37
if we and Larry for it to be the best
80:40
thing ever
80:41
it's it's raised like Jesus
80:46
oh my god it's the best case we judge
80:49
boys careful amazing your voice but I
80:54
just have to
81:10
I mean working on this for months
81:16
last night it's like 1:00 a.m. I haven't
81:18
slept in a week and I'm sitting there
81:20
thinking this doesn't happen now this
81:21
actually might not happen I'm trying to
81:24
find the words and like I'm like Jesus
81:26
please like now I feel like we have
81:34
never been more organized in our toilet
81:36
maybe one of the biggest things we've
81:38
ever done there's always that massive
81:40
relying on God to come through and so he
81:43
has to tonight what are you scared of
81:52
being underwhelming
82:00
Joel's like my brother and when he's
82:03
gone through hard time like with these
82:05
lyrics I can tell it's weighing on it
82:07
he's been working so hard on lyrics but
82:10
just this one song for the last few
82:12
weeks and I can tell that it's the
82:15
biggest deal to have to deliver with a
82:18
certain deadline for something as
82:20
massive as the form he likes a lot of
82:25
metaphor and his songs and for me when I
82:28
read the lyric for the first time which
82:29
was about an hour before we did it I was
82:34
just trying to understand exactly what
82:36
he's trying to say and to be honest I
82:38
guess I'm still grasping it because it's
82:41
there's a lot going on you know
82:46
what's that
82:49
right now are they ready such a tricky
82:53
sometimes these these almost we have
82:55
sometimes they just like it's just it's
82:58
always a process like it's just sitting
83:00
he's sitting that he's sitting there
83:01
it's like one minute you think it's
83:03
awesome and then the next minute it's
83:04
just like this doesn't even fit pretty I
83:08
can't explain it all I'm sure there
83:11
might be something in there it's like um
83:15
what I do I just took me to the whole
83:18
chorus the lyrics trying to get them all
83:21
approved true you know we have passes
83:23
Church who are you know kind of really
83:26
strong if you always you want to make
83:27
sure what we sing is actually correct to
83:29
the bottle the songs that we write you
83:34
know really a tool for church to the
83:36
logo to sing so right now we're gonna
83:37
email the lyrics and then they'll
83:39
hopefully reply back on you that's fine
83:42
but we're trying to push the boundaries
83:43
of creativity with these lyrics so there
83:45
is every chance that reply going doesn't
83:49
make sense I feel like goes with that
83:56
saying but it's been a raw few days I
83:58
think that everyone because it's just um
84:08
not a bad way right in a good way just
84:12
gives us room gives god room to move
84:13
yeah Lord Jesus we just thank you so
84:22
much for you grace those well we thank
84:24
you for the gift that you presents
84:26
dwells inside every single one of us and
84:27
I pray that people walk away talking
84:29
about how great you are tonight thank
84:31
you for this opportunity so much in
84:33
Jesus mighty name dad's getting out here
84:38
will have never actually some these
84:40
lyrics into a microphone
84:47
knowing the journey of the last couple
84:50
of weeks was quite powerful for me and I
84:53
wanted to make sure that when we did it
84:55
I wanted to lead it I didn't want to
84:58
just sing it I wanted people to actually
85:02
understand I'm not performing here if
85:05
you know
85:14
grace
85:21
sooo it's inflection
85:27
sir
85:35
the skin
85:46
James
85:57
King
86:01
name is too
86:47
two tricks
87:24
Cheers
88:55
in the bobbled Kings attama beers
88:59
Oliveira would would hold the shield and
89:02
would protect his the them from behind
89:05
and you know what it would protect them
89:09
for so long I felt like that was
89:12
actually what God wanted me to do for
89:16
Joe
89:19
but on our platform when we're together
89:22
I kind of feel like it's the same thing
89:35
how do I know this of God well for me
89:38
you know I've encountered him but
89:41
ultimately trust in God is faith it's
89:44
faith and it's like the wind you can't
89:46
see it but you know it's there you see
89:49
the impact of it and feel the impact of
89:51
it you want to feel that impact in your
89:56
own life I don't think you have to
89:59
attend Hillsong Church
90:01
there's great churches in almost every
90:03
street corner of the world my advice
90:07
would be find a local church pour your
90:11
life into it and you'll never be the
90:15
same again
90:19
skies
90:26
the earth us
90:36
cradle star overhead
90:57
of glorious
91:03
you broke
91:06
to see if did
91:22
we always have to remind ourselves why
91:24
we're doing it
91:28
a bit of you I entered a to life for so
91:32
for me like knowing
91:34
jay-z's done Sonia my my whole point
91:38
take them towards Jesus because I
91:40
believe this block off the death for
91:42
eternity
91:46
don't ever come to that Jenny with this
91:49
do you believe or do you lift your
91:51
voices sing this with me
92:03
the most important part of an on what's
92:06
the one meant with what we're doing
92:08
it's where people realize this isn't
92:10
about a dance from Australia
92:12
this isn't about
92:25
it runs on a journey everyone searching
92:28
everyone does have a purpose but he can
92:32
fulfill that purpose so much brighter
92:33
when you connect with the source of life
92:35
itself
92:36
is everything makes sense absolutely not
92:39
but I think more stuff doesn't make
92:41
sense without
93:11
from my experience he gives me purpose
93:14
he gives me a greater sense of hope that
93:19
I'm not by myself and I was in my back
93:22
and I guess I just want people that I
93:25
meet to know that hope
93:35
what makes sense of what we do to me is
93:38
the picture of the cross because if you
93:42
look at the cross you've got this
93:44
vertical element and then we've got this
93:47
element where it's reaching out I love
93:50
that picture it starts by knowing God
93:53
and understanding that He loves us
93:55
personally and then reciprocating that
93:58
by loving God and honoring him that's
94:00
what worship is if this is happening in
94:03
a way that's honest and real we're left
94:05
with no choice but to want to reach out
94:07
our hands to love others and that's
94:10
honestly what the gospel is all about
94:15
I don't know why God has used a little
94:18
youth band from a church and the outer
94:20
suburbs of Sydney but for some reason
94:22
he's giving us this opportunity
94:28
which he has to
94:33
people might measure our success by all
94:36
kinds of things but in the end this is
94:39
not about us it's ultimately about God
94:43
and take him out of the equation
94:48
our job is just to keep being faithful
94:51
with what's in our hand so whatever that
94:54
looks like you know we're up for the
94:55
journey
94:59
no matter what's going on
95:07
a piston in my
95:11
the truth is not
95:13
the creator of the universe
95:17
because
95:19
he is here
96:50
and darkness tremble a new hole me live
96:57
it every I would see Jesus ah
97:05
Creighton
97:09
come on let's declare
97:12
the fear
101:24
come on let's lift it up
102:16
King is
102:20
babies too
102:24
users
103:05
we shared some portraits
103:43
sure
105:06
this is where I stood I stood here as a
105:09
young 25 year old and pretty one the
105:14
very first times I Marcella first time
105:16
here in Australia and at the end of that
105:20
service you know we give people an
105:22
opportunity to connect with Jesus to
105:25
come to faith and so I did that really
105:28
roared the nose during the three people
105:30
responded in store remember three people
105:33
interestingly two of those people I
105:35
still known to this day today well
105:37
actually it looked exactly like it looks
105:39
now
105:40
was the book sooner and the History
105:42
Center in Sodom is just a public
105:44
community the furthest we walked into
105:47
the place I think probably over probably
105:50
a little discouraged because it was very
105:53
raw there wasn't a lot that was too
105:56
compelling about it to be honest but we
105:58
can take that night and that night we
106:00
sort of sensed but there's just a great
106:03
life and energy in the place which to me
106:05
it is still one of the great great
106:07
things about church life today is the
106:10
energy the excitement another zeal check
106:14
in the early days there was this sort of
106:16
mission statement our city and beyond so
106:19
our focus was our city
106:22
it was this beyond factor and I don't
106:24
think in all truthfulness any of us had
106:26
any comprehension what that beyond my
106:28
man
106:31
it's funny because my dad didn't like
106:33
the least likely guy you know it's kind
106:34
of super awkward you know things I got
106:37
that from him as well he lives a life
106:39
where all he's ever done which other
106:41
people for that's why we're here because
106:43
so so many leaders would be like so
106:46
insecure about other people having a
106:49
platform of being promoted or like he's
106:52
the opposite he's like guys got like you
106:54
know if we're all in this together I
106:55
think that's what is phenomenal about
106:57
who he is the guy who discovered New
107:01
Zealand Mauritius and Tasmania there's a
107:04
Dutch explorer Abel Tasman and he missed
107:06
Australia but he pioneered again in the
107:09
second time he found the west coast of
107:11
Australia so to me you never know what
107:13
big things you babe us if you don't have
107:16
a pioneering spirit
107:23
you know I just think it's great if
107:25
people feel like they're part of the
107:27
vision then the more powerful a force we
107:29
become and if so I could quickly pass me
107:31
my Bible I've been thinking a lot since
107:33
last weekend when I finished my message
107:35
talking about the church in Revelation
107:38
which is called the faithful Church what
107:40
a powerful thing when people live with a
107:42
divinely implanted sense of a purpose in
107:46
other words you know that you're alive
107:48
for something so much bigger than
107:50
yourself when we get a job leading
107:53
worship tonight the same thing we're on
107:54
the road is that you know as quickly as
107:57
possible get all the attention off us
107:58
unto God and people will you know it's
108:01
the humble beginning to wish order now
108:03
the very first music inside our church
108:06
literally was an old guy on a piano
108:07
accordion a keyboard player playing a
108:10
piano which was out of tune and some of
108:12
them some of the keys didn't even work
108:14
there was a drummer who I don't think to
108:17
be honest he could really even play and
108:19
one of the first people to come into the
108:21
church to be born again was a bass
108:23
player and his wife was a nightclub
108:25
singer so that was the start it was
108:27
extremely humble no but us at all this
108:29
is good to really go somewhere
108:46
haven't been here so long baby
108:50
like a library huh can we go in
108:59
it does not look the same this stage oh
109:07
my gosh it is - all right oh my goodness
109:18
it truly is the stage take it away babe
109:30
this is where I stood I stood here as a
109:33
young 25 year old and pretty for the
109:38
very first time to myself
109:40
first time here Australia and at the end
109:44
of that service you know we give people
109:46
always an opportunity to connect with
109:48
Jesus to come to faith and so I did that
109:51
really roared the number notes during
109:54
the three people responded I can still
109:56
remember three people interestingly two
109:58
of those people I still know to this day
110:00
today
110:01
well actually it looked exactly like it
110:03
looks now with the book sooner and the
110:06
History Center excited it's just our
110:07
little public community the first time
110:10
we walked into the place I think
110:13
probably and I were probably a little
110:15
discouraged because it was very raw
110:18
there wasn't a lot that was too
110:20
compelling about it to be honest but we
110:22
came back that night and that night we
110:24
sort of sensed but there's just a great
110:27
life and energy in the place which to me
110:29
it is still one of the great great
110:31
things about church life today is the
110:34
energy the excitement into the zeal take
110:38
in the early days there was this sort of
110:40
mission statement our city and beyond so
110:43
our focus was our city
110:46
and then there was this beyond factor
110:47
and I don't think in all truthfulness
110:49
any of us had any comprehension what
110:51
that beyond my man it's funny because my
110:56
daddy liked the least likely guy you
110:58
know it's kind of super awkward
111:01
I haven't really slept on month and a
111:07
half I'm getting crazy nightmares I jump
111:10
out of bed
111:11
thinking that I've smothered him all
111:13
that is like died or something it's
111:15
crazy he didn't smile for a little bit
111:26
once he came out I got kind of worried
111:29
about it but he's now smiles all the
111:30
time which is good such a scar it's
111:34
pretty good
111:36
he went for a checkup and he's like oh
111:38
he's got a large heart murmur they ran a
111:41
bunch of tests and they said yeah he's
111:43
got two holes in his heart it was
111:44
terrifying he came back from his
111:46
operation they said come me and hung in
111:48
and we didn't realize it was just gonna
111:50
be an open cavity so yeah that was quite
111:53
confronting what do you see money
111:56
machine it's very unhuman we felt pretty
111:58
helpless the doctor said you have to
112:01
acknowledge he's a very sick boy be
112:03
grateful for the time I've had with him
112:04
a great six weeks
112:09
I've got two sisters but one of them
112:12
died when I was 10 she was the oldest
112:15
out of this it's just 15 at time and
112:18
then I mean it's such a weird situation
112:20
like we went we ended up having was we
112:24
found her in her bedroom with her at
112:27
Brandon neck
112:28
I think everyone comes to the point
112:30
where they ask is this real for themself
112:33
moments is like how could you let that
112:35
happen or like are you really there
112:41
I guess but I would stay the hardest day
112:43
of my life was in 1999 where one of my
112:47
colleagues came into my office and the
112:50
very last thing he said I'll never
112:51
forget he said I'll one last thing Brian
112:54
he said it's not about you it's about
112:56
your father you know you think about a
112:58
lot of things that you could imagine for
113:00
the one thing I could never ever
113:01
imagined was that child abuse would come
113:04
that close to my you know my own life I
113:06
had the most horrific job of confronting
113:10
my own father and asking him about this
113:13
he would all dry in the mouth and pretty
113:16
well confess that it was true and the
113:19
fallout emotionally definitely lifted
113:21
stopped the world's cruel out there for
113:25
many people it's a fallen planet and
113:28
sadly there are casual recently and so
113:33
when they walk in to the house of God
113:35
that is not perfect but healthy alive I
113:38
have an opportunity to encounter life
113:40
the way actually was meant to be the way
113:42
God intended it to me I mean the Bible
113:46
talks about faith one of the things that
113:49
faith gives you is an incredible hope
113:51
and something much bigger than yourself
113:53
it's simple trust in God it's believing
113:57
that no matter how bad this is no matter
113:59
how her something that connects me to go
114:02
straightaway and I realize a bit of like
114:09
God Who am I to be here like
114:14
you need to like lead these people like
114:18
I'm just a country girl
116:20
music has the ability to enter someone's
116:23
soul without their permission it helps
116:26
create an atmosphere and when I first
116:31
was writing songs I thought all of the
116:33
out was in the music the melody and it's
116:37
just one aspect of it but for me it's
116:39
like now the real challenge is in
116:41
actually articulating this stuff in a
116:45
way that is accessible for people you
116:48
can personal pop song and it doesn't
116:50
really matter what it's about and sounds
116:51
good in me feel good it's great for us
116:53
you're putting words into the mouths of
116:56
people these songs are written for
117:00
people to sing not in the Bible Kings
117:02
had AMA beers Olivera would would hold
117:06
the shield and would protect is the them
117:09
from behind and you know what it would
117:12
protect them for so long I felt like
117:16
that was actually what God wanted me to
117:20
do for Joe
117:24
but on our platform when we're together
117:26
I kind of feel like it's the same thing
117:39
how do I know this of God well for me
117:43
you know I've encountered him but
117:46
ultimately trust in God is faith it's
117:49
faith and it's like the wind you can't
117:51
see it but you know it's there you see
117:54
the impact of it and feel the impact of
117:56
it you want to feel that impact in your
118:01
own life I don't think you have to
118:04
attend Hillsong Church
118:06
there's great churches in almost every
118:08
street corner of the world my advice
118:12
would be find a local church pour your
118:16
life into it and you'll never be the
118:20
same again
118:24
Skye's away
118:30
the earth theorist
118:41
cradle stars overhead
119:03
of glorious
119:08
you broke
119:11
to see if did
119:27
we always have to remind ourselves why
119:29
we're doing it
119:33
oh I entered a to life for so for me
119:37
like no
119:39
Jesus done Sonia my life my whole 20
119:43
people towards Jesus because I believe
119:45
this block off the death
119:50
come along and I don't ever come to that
119:52
Jenny Rufus do you believe order with
119:55
your voices sing this with me
120:01
I'm feeling stressed out so it's great
120:04
it's the best place yep
120:10
Lord Jesus we just thank you so much be
120:13
grace God's love is so great that you
120:16
can't fully understand it yeah sure it
120:18
doesn't make sense but trying to make
120:20
the most normal thing become normal is
120:23
like I guess the venture
121:02
Oh
121:17
Timmy to the villa
121:21
break you marriage
121:27
this hurt you
122:25
I've always felt like Hillsong worship
122:27
is just sound of a healthy vibrant local
122:31
church when I started a church I wanted
122:34
to have a church that wrote songs that
122:36
that influence the way people worship
122:38
good morning Gail we recently got a
122:40
first-hand look at how one wildly
122:43
popular mega church from Australia is
122:45
making its mark here in the United
122:47
States and despite shop declines in more
122:49
traditional organizations Hillsong has
122:51
continued to thrive like never before no
122:53
song church started in 1983 with just
122:56
under a hundred worshippers but has now
122:58
grown into a congregation of over 30
123:05
my name's koves and I play drums for
123:07
United yeah we're in the house that
123:12
we're using to write then oh yeah to
123:14
write the next album where's that we're
123:17
in San Clemente is that how you
123:18
pronounce it yeah we're in is it even
123:22
southern yeah it's Southern California
123:24
yeah I mean we flew into LA and then we
123:27
drove for a while I think we drove south
123:32
come on man help me out are you serious
123:37
I'm from the other side of the world
123:41
what was it a success
123:49
yeah
124:03
and there's part of us that feels a
124:04
responsibility to the church to write
124:06
songs they can say we listen to people
124:09
outside and the secular while doing what
124:11
I do and they're creating unbelievable
124:12
music nothing that's pressure for us is
124:15
we want to create the same thing with a
124:17
sound and hopefully it stands a lot toll
124:20
hopefully to like mean that would be the
124:23
dream
124:37
the other song
124:58
see how different it is there's such
124:59
different phrasing between the two parts
125:01
I feel like these songs that we've done
125:04
a real good job of like I like putting
125:06
these two ideas together but I don't
125:09
know maybe it's really not meant to live
125:10
in the same neighborhood
125:37
I've always been tempting the back of my
125:40
mind and made music that would satisfy
125:42
some of the creative desires within me
125:46
more like put me in a place where I
125:49
could be applauded by people I want to
125:52
be applauded by
125:56
but I just can't do it
126:52
No
127:35
I feel like you know Joel especially he
127:43
understands that there's massive just
127:47
people that need we used to go around
127:58
saying it's not a show it's not a show
128:01
because we're not rock stars I went on a
128:03
rock band but I've started to think and
128:05
hope that it is a show maybe a show of
128:08
humanity maybe a show of who God is and
128:13
hopefully a show of how good god is what
128:20
we do these days is kind of like so
128:24
consumed by all the glitz and glamour
128:30
it doesn't mean anything not reminding
128:33
ourselves that everybody is important
128:36
and everybody deserves to know that God
128:38
loves them it's impossible to truly know
128:43
Jesus and not have a heart for others
128:46
those who are poor those who are
128:48
outcasts and so I pray that that would
128:51
always be the story of our church
129:27
the other thing has tried to lay because
129:32
gravity melody stick to sing the melody
129:33
for me for saying that
130:01
we've been rehearsing for a few days in
130:04
a rehearsal space it's been the first
130:07
time the band's played some of the stuff
130:09
that we've recorded and they're sounding
130:12
really good but to be honest I haven't
130:15
heard it with folk I've heard one song
130:17
with vocals I'm pretty tired we were up
130:22
till 4:00 this morning she was up for
130:23
six just doing that these think like
130:26
just a bit of work stuff that just has
130:27
to get done it's kind of no other option
130:29
right now
130:48
I personally have been trying to finish
130:50
this song all day she's kind of funny
130:53
because Joel's go like three songs he
130:54
has to finish and I'm still struggling
130:56
to finish one song
131:13
if we and Larry for its give me the best
131:16
thing ever it's it's raised like Jesus I
131:22
don't like God it's the best case we
131:25
judge boys camp amazing your voice but I
131:30
just have to
131:46
I mean working on this for months last
131:53
night it's like 1:00 a.m. I haven't
131:54
slept in a week and I'm sitting there
131:56
thinking this doesn't happen now this
131:57
actually might not happen I'm trying to
132:00
find the words but I just can't do it
132:07
I think if we started to just try and
132:09
make it about ourselves I think it would
132:11
trip over pretty fast cuz I'll anything
132:14
with that good truthfully this whole
132:21
process is all about
132:22
some kind of a moment untouchable
132:26
unexplainable spiritual something but
132:34
for us it's just such a process like
132:37
scratching and digging and like it's
132:40
like like this puzzle pieces you know
132:45
but we don't know what the picture looks
132:47
like
132:47
and only God this I think more than
132:55
anything we're trying to wait on the
132:56
breath of God to kind of inspire
132:59
something and I think you've got to be
133:03
ready for them
133:25
we really only started with someone two
133:27
days ago you know I think have some
133:29
lyrics new hood I mean he's probably not
133:33
ready to say this but upon the mountains
133:36
we have climbed as a tower was built of
133:38
blood and steel and still we reach to
133:40
the sky
133:41
when the skies came crashing down
133:46
I know this is concept we've been
133:48
thinking about he's like everything in
133:49
the world is upwardly focused everything
133:52
in the world is like I could have the
133:53
best of this but at the best of that
133:54
gotta get a promotion gotta make my
133:56
money but the way of Jesus all the way
133:58
of God is actually downward focus and we
134:01
just need to serve people we need a lot
134:03
of people there's always that temptation
134:09
to go alright well that's right in other
134:11
oceans but not like a firm believe that
134:15
God's always doing something new as
134:17
opposed to the comfort of resting on
134:19
laurels arresting on what's worked in
134:21
the past
134:27
the end goal for us is always finding
134:29
ourselves in a place of trust if we get
134:33
to that place then we've done that job
134:35
it's not in our hands anyway it was
134:37
never to begin with
134:46
well I didn't ever get tired it's really
134:49
really awesome
134:53
there's always that the course well gets
134:57
a weird one of those weird accidents
135:06
let's get
135:16
sure
135:28
jeez
136:47
in the bobbled Kings a Tama beers
136:51
Oliveira would would hold the shield and
136:54
would protect is the them from behind
136:57
and you know would it would protect them
137:01
for so long I felt like that was
137:04
actually what God wanted me to do for
137:08
Joe
137:11
but on our platform when we're together
137:13
I kind of feel like it's the same thing
137:26
how do I know this of God well for me
137:30
you know I've encountered him but
137:33
ultimately trust in God is faith it's
137:36
faith and it's like the wind you can't
137:38
see it but you know it's there you see
137:41
the impact of it and feel the impact of
137:43
it you want to feel that impact in your
137:48
own life I don't think you have to
137:51
attend Hillsong Church there's great
137:54
churches in almost every street corner
137:55
of the world my advice would be final
138:12
and there's part of us that feels a
138:13
responsibility to the church to write
138:15
songs they can see we listen to people
138:18
outside and the secular while doing what
138:20
they're doing they're creating
138:21
unbelievable music nothing that's
138:23
pressure for us is we want to create the
138:25
same thing with a sound and it stands up
138:29
tall
138:29
hopefully tall like me not a bit a dream
138:45
the other song
139:06
see how different it is there's such
139:08
different phrasing between the two parts
139:10
I feel like these songs that we've done
139:13
a real good job of like I like putting
139:15
these two ideas together but I don't
139:18
have maybe I just made enough men to
139:19
live in the same neighborhood
139:46
I've always been tempted in the back of
139:49
my mind and made music that would
139:51
satisfy some of the creative desires
139:53
within me or like put me in a place
139:58
where I could be applauded by people I
140:01
want to be applauded by
140:05
but I just can't do it
140:11
I think if we started to just try and
140:13
make it about ourselves I think it would
140:15
trip over pretty fast cuz I don't think
140:18
were that good
140:19
truthfully but this whole process is all
140:26
about
140:26
some kind of a moment untouchable
140:30
unexplainable spiritual something but
140:38
for us it's just such a process like
140:41
scratching digging and like it's like
140:45
like this puzzle pieces you know but we
140:50
don't know what the picture looks like
140:51
and only got this I think more than
140:59
anything we're trying to wait on the
142:06
okay
142:13
my soul
142:22
you
142:27
what's been the feedback performance on
142:30
oceans I don't want it like thunder
142:33
sound like cuz it's not about it look
142:36
yeah
142:37
what's been the feedback three
142:38
performance on oceans yeah um people
142:41
said thank you
142:42
some people thank me and it sounds way
142:44
but for the hi night cuz they're like
142:46
it's that it's that moment when I get
142:51
emotional just you know this yeah people
142:57
just said thank you cuz it's like maybe
142:59
that moment for them is like the my way
143:02
I just don't know like would Socratic
143:04
God I like like was to explain a
143:08
situation and like it just kind of like
143:09
unlocks things tell me who said that
143:12
it's like giving expression to something
143:13
that I didn't know that I could say to
143:16
God or like had that moment of like this
143:18
is so hard yet I trust you and yeah cuz
143:22
amazing people have said sir
143:48
my name's coves and I play drums for
143:50
United yeah and where are we we're in
143:54
the house that we're using to write then
143:56
oh yeah to write the next album where's
143:59
that we're in sync
146:42
well as if to say
147:00
I don't really have any major theme for
147:03
the album but if I was gonna have one
147:05
starting place it'd just be the
147:07
Beatitudes Matthew five if we're getting
147:11
the same page with this it'll never be
147:12
awesome it says God blesses those who
147:15
are poor and realized they need him for
147:18
the kingdom of heaven is theirs God
147:20
blesses those who mourn for they will be
147:22
comforted God blesses those who are
147:25
humble for they will inherit the whole
147:27
earth God blesses those
147:31
righteousness with aliens
147:45
there's probably three times in my life
147:49
oh I had a little conversation with God
147:51
all I said said I wanted to sing and
147:54
that I wanted him to use me I didn't
147:57
know what that looked like and I didn't
147:58
even know if what would happen
147:59
definitely not thinking that item
148:01
interested me cuz I don't like city
148:06
I kinda was in a place where I had $200
148:09
left in the bank
148:10
and it was for the next week's rent and
148:12
that's all I had everyone else that I
148:14
was crazy cuz I just wish my mom she's
148:16
right Deborah you have $200 that's what
148:18
you have so I moved down visited the
148:22
city campus and I was like just amazed
148:25
by the bush and I said to go I was like
148:27
I love the heart of worship here like
148:30
you know what they're doing and I was
148:32
like if I could just be part of it
148:33
I'd love to and then have me say to you
148:36
look you know I I'm working in City
148:38
campus it just honor
148:40
so things where I'm like God loves me he
148:42
puts all these things in place
148:48
I just love Jesus and I love his
148:50
presence and I love the fact that we get
148:52
to sing and just worship Him
148:58
I actually used to look up to the vocal
149:01
team infinity campus up until a few
149:02
months ago
149:03
or my job role change and I started
149:05
touring just as a full-time job I'd
149:08
actually done like a lot of secular gigs
149:10
and I learnt a lot of stuff but it was
149:12
nothing compared to see the church so
149:16
much different with the joy factor
149:19
some people don't actually know how to
149:22
worship God uh
149:23
they haven't encountered him before so
149:25
sometimes all they need is like someone
149:27
just to lift their hands for them to get
149:28
like maybe I should do that and like
149:30
actually lifting your head is like a
149:32
sign of surrender and it's so I love
149:34
doing it all the time you see me
149:44
I grew up in a Christian home I accepted
149:47
him into my heart actually when I was
149:48
five but it was when I was like 16 17
149:53
when I kind of made the decision to like
149:56
go to church for myself because I wanted
149:58
to go from then I'm normal he's like I
150:02
guess the
150:55
Timmy to the villa
150:59
you'll never change
151:05
this hurt you
152:03
I've always felt like Hillsong worship
152:05
is just sound of a healthy vibrant local
152:09
church when I started a church I wanted
152:12
to have a church that wrote songs that
152:14
that influence the way people worship
152:16
good morning Gail we recently got a
152:18
first-hand look at how one wildly
152:20
popular mega church from Australia is
152:23
making its mark here in the United
152:25
States and despite shop declines in more
152:27
traditional organizations Hillsong has
152:29
continued to thrive like never before
152:31
l searched started in 1983 with just
152:34
under a hundred worshippers but has now
152:36
grown into a congregation of over 30,000
152:39
in Australia now they a brand of rock
152:41
and roll religion as going services have
152:43
lines around the block 95,000 members
152:45
and twelve
152:46
there are satellite churches today from
152:48
London to Paris Kiev to Cape Town twelve
152:54
years I walked away from it Monday
152:55
morning this hard shell around my heart
153:00
just begin
153:03
the first thing I knew about Hillsong
153:05
was a song here we were in America
153:07
singing a song that was born thousands
153:09
of miles away in Australia and that's a
153:12
great thing to be known for but what you
153:13
find out is that in most great movements
153:16
like Hillsong the song is the tip of the
153:18
spear and that tip penetrates into the
153:23
hearts of people it cuts through the
153:24
curtains that divide the church and
153:26
divide countries but what's behind it is
153:30
the arrow in the arrow of Hillsong is
153:33
the story of Jesus
155:09
we have no explanation for what we are
155:12
doing now and what we're seeing now we
155:17
get back to our hotel rooms did you that
155:20
was weird
155:22
we just did that and no one's gonna know
155:25
we're the biggest band you've never
155:28
heard of so my neighbors they know I'm a
155:30
Christian they know I work for a church
155:32
but they have no idea what I just did
155:35
last night
155:38
and we share that and that forges some
155:44
pretty awesome relationships this is cut
155:49
he doesn't have the guts to do it like
155:52
look at him he's a girl
157:37
the last thing you want is something you
157:40
wrote because you thought it was a cool
157:41
idea or a cool lyric or that rhymed you
157:46
know is suddenly leading somebody to
157:47
think something that is not in line with
157:49
this Java is really hard with lyrics
157:53
like you'll spend months on stuff
157:55
there's not many Christian lyrics that
157:58
talk about going to the great unknown or
158:00
this concept of God if you're not going
158:03
to help me I'm not going to make it kind
158:04
of thing a lot of those themes they're a
158:07
little bit too blue for Christians
158:08
because you're supposed to have it
158:10
together all the time
158:11
so it's it's a hard thing when like
158:14
Christians go like you just got to be
158:16
real positive and you've just got to
158:19
believe that God's gonna you know do
158:22
whatever because at the end of the day I
158:23
think God can kind of do whatever he
158:25
wants
158:31
but I haven't really slept for a month
158:33
and a half I'm getting crazy nightmares
158:36
I jump out of bed thinking that I've
158:39
smothered him all that is like died or
158:42
something it's crazy he didn't smile for
158:53
a little bit once he came out I got kind
158:55
of worried about it but he's now smiles
158:57
all the time which is good
159:11
I've always felt like Hillsong worship
159:13
is just sound of a healthy vibrant local
159:17
church when I started a church I wanted
159:20
to have a church that wrote songs that
159:22
that influenced the way that people
159:24
worship good morning Gail we recently
159:26
got a first-hand look at how one wildly
159:29
popular mega church from Australia is
159:31
making its mark here in the United
159:33
States and despite shop declines in more
159:35
traditional organizations Hillsong has
159:37
continued to thrive like never before
159:39
song Church started in 1983 with just
159:42
under a hundred worshippers but has now
159:44
grown into a congregation of over 30,000
159:47
in Austria now their brand of rock and
159:49
roll religion as going services have
159:51
lines around the block 25,000 members in
159:53
12
159:54
there are satellite churches today from
159:56
London to Paris Kiev to no song church
160:10
is drawing in the crowds one reason
160:12
their Christian rock band Hillsong
160:14
UNITED the Hillsong has such a
160:17
life-giving culture that wherever they
160:20
go people that maybe normally wouldn't
160:22
connect with God do and their lives are
160:25
transformed in such a powerful way that
160:27
really it's sweeping across the world
160:33
everything starts with humble beginnings
160:34
we sure do you know the very first music
160:37
inside our church literally was an old
160:40
guy on a piano accordion a keyboard
160:43
player playing a piano which was out of
160:44
tune and some of them some of them the
160:46
keys didn't even work there was a
160:48
drummer who I don't think to be honest
160:50
he could really even play and one of the
160:52
first people to come into the church to
160:54
be born again was a bass player and his
160:57
wife was a nightclub singer so that was
160:59
the start it was extremely humble no
161:01
Buddhist at all this is good to really
161:03
go somewhere
161:19
haven't been here so long baby
161:23
like a library huh can we go in it does
161:34
not look the same this stage oh my gosh
161:41
it is - all right
161:48
oh my goodness it truly is the stage
161:57
take it away
162:02
skies
162:09
the earth us
162:19
cradle star overhead
162:40
of glorious
162:46
you
162:49
- see
162:52
if dude
163:06
we always have to remind ourselves while
163:07
we doing
163:11
I entered a to life for so for me like
163:16
knowing Jesus done something in my life
163:19
my whole point
163:21
take them towards Jesus because I
163:23
believe this block off the death
163:28
come along and I don't ever come to
163:30
touch any of this do you believe or do
163:33
you lift your voices sing this with me
163:46
the most important part of a nod when
163:49
someone mess with what we're doing it's
163:51
where people realize this isn't about a
163:53
ban from Australia this is about
164:08
Aaron's on a journey everyone searching
164:11
everyone does have a purpose but you can
164:15
fulfill that purpose so much greater
164:16
when you connect with the source of life
164:18
itself does everything makes sense
164:20
absolutely not but I think more stuff
164:24
doesn't make sense without
164:54
for my experience he gives me focus it
164:58
gives me a greater sense it
165:06
yeah
165:19
please no no bad
165:35
told you to know
165:41
I feel like you know Joel especially he
165:48
understands that there's massive because
165:52
people have need we used to go around
166:03
saying it's not a show it's not a show
166:06
because we're not rock stars or we're
166:07
not a rock band but I've started to
166:10
think and hope that it is a show maybe a
166:13
show of humanity maybe a show of through
166:16
goddess and hopefully a show of how good
166:21
god is what we do these days is kind of
166:28
like so consumed by all the glitz and
166:32
glamour
166:35
it doesn't mean anything you're not
166:37
reminding ourselves that everybody is
166:40
important and everybody deserves to know
166:43
that God loves them it's impossible to
166:47
truly know Jesus and not have a heart
166:50
for others those who are poor those who
166:53
are outcasts and so I pray that that
166:56
would always be the story of that church
167:08
we are heading to a compassion village
167:11
you know we sing about how much we love
167:13
God and we talk about how much we want
167:15
to change the world but you can actually
167:16
do it there what compassion do is they
167:20
partner with local churches just to help
167:22
the poorest of the poor with education
167:25
basic nutrition for me that's not even
167:32
that big of a sacrifice you know my $40
167:35
a month Moses Moses where's your bed
167:38
where do you sleep on the floor that's a
167:42
big bed that's a king-size bed we can
167:45
stand in front of tens of thousands of
167:47
people and celebrate and jump and sing
167:50
and yeah this is awesome touring with
167:52
the band but not being too detached from
167:54
people's realities that are coming to
167:56
these nights or that people face around
167:58
the world I think is such a healthy
167:59
thing and I want to make sure that
168:07
lift up
168:26
Jesus Christ
169:43
come on Amy
